My dad got two truck this month. Both are 1998 or 99 but they are the same motor. Saturday and Sunday he spend swapping the motor out went to start it. Did not start pulled the computer and had water poor out. So he swap computers out. Went to start it nothing. So he went to swap the pats system out. That's what's different between the two, one has pats system and one don't.

We have both trucks
What do we do now besides take it to ford

I'm not sure on rangers. IIRC My neon has a collar on the steering column that needs to talk to the key. The collar talks to the computer also.

You will want to dry out the original computer, or find a non-PATS replacement.

1999/2000 Rangers have Type B PATS, it will have a separate PATS module usually located behind the passenger side air bag above the glove box.
This PATS module and the computer(PCM) were "married" at the factory so they are a matched set, and the PATS keys were added at the same time.
So you would need to get the PATS module and wiring harness, not sure how much that would entail maybe the whole engine harness.

Yes there is an antenna(wand) surrounding the ignition key slot, so that would have to be moved to the other vehicle along with its wiring to the PATS module, and the key cylinder as well because you need to use the correct PATS keys that are cut for that cylinder.

IMO...............better to just get a non-PATS computer

Yes, Type B usually allows starter motor to work but disables fuel
Type E, I believe, disabled starter and fuel

Pats module has 10 wires, 4 go to pats transceiver (antenna/wand thats around the ignition cylinder), 2 wires go to diagnostic port, one to ground, one to constant power, one to ignition power, and the last goes to the theft light in the instrument cluster. Its possible that powering up these components separately will delete the programming. Once this is wired in, and you use the keys from the pats truck, it should start, if not, they will need to be reintroduced...

IF..........all the wiring is correct and in place, it is usually 1 to 1.5 hr shop time charge to reflash/marry PATS, get them to add a few keys at the same time.
Plus towing to dealer.

If wiring is not working or in place then......................shop time plus parts, it is kind of open ended.

1998 compatible computer(ECU, EEC-V, PCM) is usually under $100
From 1996-1998 with 4.0l and matching trans vehicle(ECUs are transmission specific)

It takes me aproximately 15-20 minutes if I can do it the first time around (10 minute delay for security access to pcm each time its accessed). This is not done often at the dealership, and I have found some dealerships don't even know how. Inquire from a tech (not a service writer) if they have done this before. It takes a certain tool and a specific process...
