Can anyone help me? I'm thinkin about swapping a 4.2 out of a 2000 f150 in to a 88 2wd ranger. I have a wreaked f150. Anyone that has done this swap. What motor mounts was used, And what fab work had to be done? Cause from my understanding this motor is suppose to be wide and a tight fit into my ranger.

Look up all things for a 302 swap. It is a 302 minus 2 pistons. But the wiring harness may be harder to figure out

Seems like more work than its worth.

You should try to trade that 4.2 for a 4.0 that'll just drop right in, or If you wanna spend the effort to do something more custom, go find a 302.

I can't imagine the 4.2 puts out much more power than the 4.0...

WHY DO I KEEP BUYING DODGES?!?!?
Supposedly its about 217 HP and 262 ft lbs...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Essex_V6_engine_(Canadian)#4.2

Skimming thru Explorer specs online, the 5.0 had about 215 HP apparently.... I remember reading in Automobile that the 5.0 Mustangs had about 175 HP.

I am curious what the weight differences are since I believe the Essex V6s had aluminum heads, and the block is a 6 cylinder not an 8 cylinder....

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm still thinkin about this swap I'm wantin something with a lil power and idk how muck I can get out of this 4.2. I've also thought about the 5.0 swap but it would be cheaper for me to go sbc if I do a v8 swap.

Bummer, was kinda hoping to see someone do this.... If it's already an F-150 engine, it would seem to give you a bit of flexibility when it comes to transmissions and such

I am thinking about doing this swap , I have a healthy 2000 4.2L from a E150 .
This swap has been done on Early 90's T-Birds with a original 3.8L
The T-bird had EEC-IV and a TFI Distributor.
They also use plastic Windstar intake manifolds on the mustang 3.8L.
The widstar produced a little more HP.
I have found that the 4.2 timing cover changed somewhere near 2000 and not sure if you can pop in a distributor.

I have a 2.9L at the moment.
