What's involved with converting a 6R60 4wd to 2wd? Putting in my ranger and want to swap the transfer case for a straight tail housing.
What 2wd tail housing will fit on a 6r60?
Does the output shaft need to be changed?
Has anyone done this before?

Thanks

Does the trans need to be completely torn apart to change the output shaft?

What vehicles run a 2wd 6r60 that I can pull one from a scrapyard, or is there somewhere to buy a tail housing online?

No, you can leave the clutch packs assembled, you just have to take them all out of the transmission.

My other thought was just selling the 6r60 and getting a 2wd 6r80 out of... Literally anything haha F150, mustang, whatever. That way it would already be configured the way I need it and handle a little more power once I start dropping more into it.

I've heard from some guys who worked at a Ford plant that the 6r60s are known to "explode".

Anyone know what would be involved with that computer wise? I've never dug into that stuff so I'm curious if it's just plug and play or if something has to be modified or changed electronically.

They don't explode...they do fail more often as they were transitional from go and a science project. By 2010 the 6r80 is beastly for the most part.

I've been looking around on this, and a major issue I'm potentially facing with just going with a 6r80 2wd is if the '08 computer will talk to it. I could maybe get a computer and 6r80 out of a 09-10 explorer, but I feel like the cost would be more than intended.

I looked around at just swapping the output shaft to the 2wd one, but I can't find an extension housing that goes on the 6r60. I talked to one of the guys at Cobra Transmissions, and he believes that the entire case would have to be changed, which again is another $200+. Could I just unbolt the transfer case and hook directly up to the output shaft?

Any ideas on this?

So I just wrapped up the utter displeasure of replacing one of these transmissions in a full-size Transit.

I could swear the last time I took a 2wd 6R80 out of something it had a proper tail-stock with a slip yoke. This one, in a T-350 had a real stubby output shaft, with a yoke bolted on to the end of it, and no tail housing of any sort, just a blunt end to the trans case, which looked like it could accept a tail stock or extension housing.

That's fine. That's what the little shield is for.

This is the filter from the one I just did.

After I cleaned it off.

I got cracked in the back of the head by the drive shaft while I was trying to get the rear carrier put back up. It was hanging by just the forked end and my assistant twitched his nose.

I too enjoy driving right on by Bob Ruth Ford. Their service manager is crooked (I worked with him before at a different dealership) and I won't do business with them until he is gone.

On an unrelated note, I'm in Frederick most of next week for class.

I just like to look at the vehicles. Unfortunately in my experiences most service managers have been crooked. I'm sure there are some good ones but I haven't seen them.

Frederick is okay but I'd love to get back in PA. I'm a NEPA transplant.
