Today I was given a 2003 super cab rwd with the 4.0 and automatic. It has a bad 3.55 8.8 in it. The c clip broke on one side doing 70 and he lost a shaft and bent the whole housing. I recently bought a 4.10 ls 8.8 to put in my 08 2.3 ranger in place of the 3.73 open. I know I should probably put the 8.8 in the 03 but I really want the 4.10 ls in my 08. Would the 7.5 hold up if not abused? I'm trying to find another r7 or r8 for the 03 but then again my 7.5 is a free axle at this point.

The 7.5 should hold up fine. The weakest point is going to be the axle shafts, at the splines, where a 7.5 is functionally no different than a 28-spline 8.8.

I think you'd be fine as well. The 5.0 install in my '99 is going to be in front of a 7.5 for a while. There's an 8.8/31 spline axle in the works, but I'm trying to deal with one project at a time.

I have been running a 7.5 with a locker behind a 4.0 with both 31's and 33's for years and never had any issues with it.

My credo
If you ain't first you're last
Just gonna throw this out there, I swapped a 4.0 in my truck and a few months later I grenaded the spiders on the 7.5.. granted it saw some clutch dumps, so morale of the story if you like dumping the clutch swap a 8.8 31 spline in. Swapping an 8.8 28 spline won’t do anything for ya (same axleshafts/spiders. if you drive normal I wouldn’t worry about it and run the 7.5.

It's an auto so won't be dumping the clutch
