Hey yall, I need some help. I have searched all over gods green earth for this fuel sending unit in my 88’ ranger it’s got the two prong connection and one hose out of the top and I can’t find one that fits anywhere. The one we did find at autozone the plate was way to small for the locking ring and it fell right in the tank. I’ve asked the ford dealership near me and they have no idea either so I’m stuck. For now I put the stock sending unit back in, if someone could point me in the right direction that’d be great. I’ll attach a picture or two below of the unit and the truck. I put a new pump in today as well as the old sending unit as well. The pump is not married to the sending unit. The pump is mounted on the engine block itself, the sending unit is just used for the gas gauge.

LMC truck lists one, but you run into the danger that it will be too small like the other one you found. We have ran into this with the larger Fords, certain combinations are just not available anymore.

You have a single line mechanical fuel pump style sending unit, but you have a large hole tank for the sending units with pumps. They did the same thing with the larger trucks, when some of the trucks went to a in tank pump, ALL the tanks went the larger hole sending unit. But some trucks still had a mechanical fuel pump, so no pump on the sending unit.

Do you really need a new sending unit? The only solution I have is to buy a two line sending unit and retro fitting the sending unit arm and box from the new unit onto your old unit. That way the electrical plug will still fit that is in your harness. Or you could buy the unit that fell through the hole and rob that sending unit box. That is the only thing that can really fail on your unit besides the float itself.

I figured I’d need one, it’s been sitting since 07 and the tank was rusted out. I need to do a dmm (ohms) test on the sender to make sure it’s still operable but if the test shows it’s not needed I’ll keep the stock one. I just figured the rusty fuel ruined the float electronics in it.

Did you already get a new tank? You may be able to order a older style tank with the smaller hole. Everything else should be the same. Then that sending unit that fell through would work.

Yea sadly I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the new tank😂 she’s installed and it’s actually a tad bit bigger than the stock oem tank it holds 17 gallons now I believe.

1988 and earlier Rangers used these sending unit OHMs
73 ohms Empty
10 ohms Full

1989 and up use
16 ohms Empty
168 ohms Full
So NOT compatible

Good info here on cleaning up an older sending unit


The single hose connector(pre-1998) were for carbureted engines, with mechanical fuel pump on the engine, no pump in the tank

Google: 73-10 ohm sending unit

Might find something you can adapt to your assembly, if you can't clean up yours

Yea the old one cleaned up alright, some minor rust left over but the steel wire brush I used got most of it off. I’ll post the dmm results in here tomorrow when I get to the shop in the morning
