My 91 ranger 4.0 has a decent ac temp when fully charged. I just found a leak on the condenser and will be replacing next week. I do have a question I'm not understanding on the ac function. Why does it operate more efficiently at higher rpm, significantly cooler air? Is it the increased air flow over the condenser, in which case my plan to install an electric fan on it would benefit it greatly. Or is it the compressor that operates more efficiently at increased rpm or both?

Both.

You hit the nail pretty square on the head, any pump performs better at high speed, and then the fan pushes more air at higher speed, so better cooling.

You should also notice much better cooling while moving vs sitting still.
