RonD thanks for the idea but my son and I got it tightened up this morning. It wasn't the bushings; it was the pin in the shifter. It got pushed in and my sones didn't notice it. Not sure if the PO did it and tightened it up until it didn't move, but he used a punch and knocked out enough, so it fit in the slot in the shaft coming from the trans and cleaned up the bolt/ threaded rod and put it back together and it works good with no slop from side to side. I looked and couldn't find any place where I can get the double threaded shaft with the flat part in the middle, [art number f65z-7L197-aa. I'm guessing the only place I will find one is at a junkyard and hope it's in better shape than mine. One of the online Ford places showed the price at $30 but had a note saying not available.
