Axle spline count

Is there anyway to determine if my axles are 28 or 31 spline without removing the axles ? The axle code is 96, and the tag ID is [S354F 3 73 8 8 7A16].

Assuming this is the factory axle in your 97 they are 28 spine.

The 28 spline tubes are smaller around, but I don't know the measurements off the top of my head.

The main tube on the 31 spline 8.8" axle uses 3.25" u-bolts.. I do know that much.

2.80" dia at the U-bolts = 28 spline
3.25" dia at the u-bolts = 31 spline.

An exception is 2010, 2011 disc-brake Ranger 8.8s, they have 3.25" tubes but are 28 spline (they also neck down to 3" at the pumpkin).
