Yes 2-strokes are camless, and valveless for that matter, lol, but this is for 4 stroke engines.

Looks like a very good idea to me.
One of the problems with cams is that they have to be made for fixed RPM performance.

Cam phasing(moving Cam out of time with Crank) is OK but open time for the valves is still fixed by the cam lobe.

Oscillating the cam itself is possible but gets very complicated mechanically.

I like the idea if actuators for the valves, instant open and close and you can set Dwell for each valve on the fly :icon_thumby:

It could also open the possibility of a starterless engine. Shoot fuel and spark into two cylinder on the down stroke and close the valves.

I recently watched a show of this design engine r+d. Its real close to reality.

These 8-9 gear transmissions keep engines in their sweet spot... I don't know how the gains of going camless would play out with that.

20% less weight and more compact. 30% less emisions.

There's is ev (electric valve) motors out there that's a 4 stroke. The EV uses a electric solenoid over the valve and can increase/decrease duration, lift all that stuff on the fly. So at idle it can be a small lift.etc and at higher rpm bigger lift.etc it's cool to see this motor running with no valve train noise.

All the power and emissions benefits of a twin independent variable cam V-8 (think coyote 5.0) in something as narrow as a 2.9.

More power, improved fuel economy, decreased emissions in a smaller, lighter package. I love the idea.

Konigseggs FreeValve is the system I'm most familiar with, and seems fairly complex with hydraulic, electric and pneumatic controls all working together. If they can make it reliable, they'll have a winner.

Yes, might need pre-heater to get gas vapor on cold days and then open the other cylinders exhaust valves slightly at this time so no compression resistance in crank, just might work :icon_thumby:

Kind of depends on how they get it packaged.

And the 3.5EB will already tear a 5.0 apart...

Starts/stop instead of idling away fuel.

No valve train so turning off a couple of cylinders for an increase in mileage gets more efficient.

Most engines already turn the fuel off when coasting.

My brother's Coyote is sucky for engine braking in the mountains even with a manual, the cams change around so it basically has little compression and nothing to hold you back... so that goes both ways too.

Yes, opens another door, you could increase engine braking by valve timing when coasting, save wear and tear on the brakes on longer downhill grades.

A normal engine isn't too bad for that, the variable cams on his open up so you coast better (guessing so you coast better for normal day to day driving) on his coyote... and it isn't that impressive for braking.

My 2v 5.4 with an automatic and the OD turned off has much more engine braking with cams that just don't care.

Not sure how you would switch it back and forth because both have their place.
