can a 4X4 TRANS become 2wd trans

Well a friend of mine was clipped by a semi this past month and totaled his truck, the truck was a 2004 mazda 4.0L auto. the front axle was snapped so now I would like to place the 4.0 and trans into my ranger. but My question is can I change the tail housing from my trans to his trans both are the same trans and I would like to use his b/c it is newer and well mantianed and I know the history of the motor and trans unlike my used truck I bought . thanks Again for all your info.

you have 3 options
1 the cheap way is install the tranny and transfer case and you will have a low range .
2 is more costly by having the output shaft changed
3 use your tranny.

will the 3.0 bell bolt up to a 4.0? Do the bell housing come Off the the newer 5speed auto trans? thanks agian

no the 3.0 and 4.0 bell housings are a different bolt pattern as far as being removable i don't know the answer to that one . all i can say is you would have to look but i am guessing by saying no

one of the 2wd b2 dummy transfer cases might work,or get a quote from a tranny shop on converting the tranny if its possible.

They are removable on the A4LD, I took the bell housing off of my blown 85's to incorporate into a stand for my 2.9 until I decide what to do with it. Although they may have changed it in the later years/variations, I doubt it.
