Cool stuff IMHO...

Not a huge following for collectors... but there are some.

Mine is wall art... and makes me smile.

When it comes to kerosene lanterns, Deitz are my favorites. I've tried others over the years and they work ok but my Deitz lanterns have always worked better, even the foreign made stuff.

For something different I thought I would go thru dad's lantern and surprise him for Christmas.

Before:

During:

After:

I stripped it down, cleaned out the mud dauber mess, gave it a spit bath, soaked the fount with acetone for awhile to break up any petrified fuel and reassembled. I didn't replace anything on it. The thing runs like a champ, just like it did the last time dad ran it 20 years ago.

I found a proper sized globe for the 220 that had a cracked globe at the local hardware store and replace the cracked globe. That's probably going to be about it for them until spring. I did order cases for all three and some miscellaneous replacement pieces for them. I'll take them apart as much as I can in the spring and clean them up as much as I can without damaging the original paint and markings.

I have two more lanterns I want to try to light yet. Then I still have my 220J I am overhauling (currently soaking the fount hoping to improve fuel flow) that stupid little $2 stove tugging at my heartstrings too.

Aside from the stove and 220J I think the 220E and CL2 should be pretty much ready to go. Kind of fun little projects I can play with inside and if I run out of time and they sit it isn’t a big deal.

Cool! That turned out great. I'm sure he'll like it. I was just talking to my dad about my lantern collection and he said that he recently gave away all of his Coleman gear... oh well.

I recently overhauled a 220E and a 286 (aka CL-1.) The 286 suffered from the infamous melted plastic parts. Spent way more than I should have fixing it up but it works great and is in superb condition now.

You guys just made me go through an old camping tote and pull out my single burner 508 I bought new (stamped 90). The last time I tried to use it... it didn't go so well. I don't remember the exact problem was but the generator regulator cover is off and it appears that there was some flames that were coming from the flame adjustment lever. Gonna order a generator regulator and see if I can get it up and running. Be nice to put this thing back into service.

I think that is similar to my 400B.

The valve is full of o-rings and it has a schrader valve (like a tire valve stem but rated for fuel) to act as the throttle. The O-rings go bad and they leak. The more I played with mine the worse it got, I threw the towel in when mine started puking fuel around the flame admustment lever. It is like $30 for a new valve assembly and generator for mine... and then it is basically a new stove.

Yeah… that story sounds really familiar. I do remember messing with it and just making things worse.

So... I've been searching for a new Generator for my 508. These appear to be pretty hard to find. Only thing I could find was one site that said they were on national backorder with delivery expected mid December. You guys care to share your go to parts source?

And yes... I'm sure the backordered part is more then what I paid for the stove when new.

That place has a bunch of Coleman parts... unless you need 508 generator... lol

Thanks for the link though.

eBay? Maybe? I don't know. I'd be kinda surprised if you actually needed a new generator, I have used some REALLY crusty ones in lanterns that work fine. Soaking them in vinegar for a few hours and then cleaning with a brush, compressed air, and carburetor cleaner helps. Sounds to me like maybe fixing the leaking valve will solve a lot of problems.

oldcolemanparts is a great resource. They ship really fast too.

Ran across this article the other day too, thought it was pretty neat:

I hear you Shran… I emptied the tank yesterday and letting it air out before I take it to the basement for surgery. I will see if I can clean it up and make the one I have work. Then go from there....
