I have a 2001 4.0 ranger and I've got no A/C. Heats fine and it blows hard its just the compressor is not turning on, if I fill the system it will run for a while but then the compressor stops turning on. The shop says I have a leak which makes sense I looked at the UV dye and its all around the compressor. The shop wants over $1000 to redo the whole system, but I'm thinking I should just replace the compressor because that is where its leaking. Now I'm looking for a replacement and I cant find any info on what cars I can pull from. So basically the question is, For a 2001 4.0 Ranger what other models/years use the same compressor? Thanks.

Here's the compatibility list on Rockauto.

Looks like a new one is only $130.

You could also just buy an O ring kit and replace all the O rings to see if that fixes the leak. If the compressor still works then you probably don't need to replace it

If the compressor's shaft seal is leaking then there is no easy way to replace just that seal in the field. They likely quoted the whole system due to the age of the vehicle and probability of contamination of the system from compressor wear due to running low.

This is why I hated AC work. If you price doing the job correctly the customer doesn't want to pay for the work. When you price it at a level they are willing to pay you run the risk of missing something and having it come back on you.
