Engine install, remove motor mounts?

Anyone ever remove the motor mounts to install a 2.9? Seems to me it would make it easier to insert into the transmission. Then after bolt up you could raise the engine and tranny combo and re-install the motor mounts. Any experience out there?

Can you actually get to the bolts to tighten down the mounts that way? It's been years since I've looked at an earlier truck, but on my '99 the motor mounts are a pain to swap out even with the engine out.

I thread all thread rods into the dowels and have the engine lined up correctly about a foot before it meets the trans.

Not sure what you mean by this, what are thread rods?

All-thread, sometimes called ready-rod. A rod that is threaded for the whole distance. Can be used in many cases where a regular bolt just wouldn't work.

That's how the Ford shop manual says to do it. I used to struggle too until I got my hands on a copy and read it.

According to the shop manual, there should be sufficient room to lift the block and install/remove the mounts. It probably would help to have them out of the way when installing/removing the engine. I'll remember that when I do mine in the near future.

I had to do it on mine once, getting the mounts out with a 4x4 axle installed was a pain.

I had not considered that. Something else to look forward to when I swap 2.9's, as I thought it would be a good idea to install new mounts at that time .

So you r putting two foot or so long rods through the bottom holes of the tranny and the threading them through the dowels on the block?

I understood it as, you thread two 12" rods into the lower bolt threads (dowels) in the block, then line them up with the bolt holes in the trans when putting the engine into position, using the rods as guides. After the block and trans are connected, put the top 4 bolts in (or at least the middle two), remove the two threaded rods, and install the bottom bolts.

I was considering pulling the trans when I do mine, because I never did care for trying to get the pilot shaft lined up and at the correct angle, etc. But this would simplify the procedure, and save me the four hours it takes me to remove and install the 4x4 trans.
