I have a '97 Mountaineer with a 5L that I want to put in a '67 Mustang and kinda want to keep the 4R70 (don't know when they added the W, I know something changed in '98 as I was asked that rebuilding the one for my '00 sploder). So I'll need to convert to 4x2 which I'm sure I'll need a junkyard donor. My questions are mostly speedo and interchangeability related. The '67 mustang has a C4 I think (whatever was a 3 speed auto behind a 289) if that maters for speedo cable end style and year of donor vehicle... I imagine the floor shifter will have to be reworked too or something... adding an overdrive off button sounds easy enough...

I imagine as new as I can get the better, I have two 4R70W's in my stable as it is so I should have a core around no matter what. So what kind of options to I have? Crown vics, mustangs, F150 and maybe E150's?

I'm in no rush, just trying to get mentally ready and to see if I can find a cheap enough donor... I'm not worried about the act of swapping the parts as long as they're interchangeable, if I get stumped swapping stuff I have a friend that's a professional transmission mechanic...

The 4R70W from a 3.8 Mustang will be a bolt in swap, as will the one from a 4.2 F-150 4x2.

Keep in mind that the output shaft is literally the first part that gets assembled into the trans housing, so to convert a 4x4 trans to 4x2, you have to totally disassemble it.

Good to know, but yeah, I know about that being the annoying part going in first :), but bolt on is best! Although I would have the trans torn down for some attention and shift kit and make sure in good shape no matter what...

Dang engineering mind always thinking backward on adapting what I have, I guess I was expecting the only options being from mod motors...
