Actually the whole idea behind stepside beds was originally because they made it easier to unload stuff like gravel, dirt, manure etc since the wheel wells didn't get in the way.... They are just "stylish" now but they served a legitimate purpose for hauling at one point.

i figured stepsides were easier to build, just make a box and attach fender shells. i saw a fullsize once that had a homemade flatbed but with stepside fenders, it fooled me at first, a ‘81 chevy 3/4 longbed stepside? then i got a closer look at it...
