Osage orange is/was commonly used for making bows and arrows.
Not common enough, the crap grows like a weed. It would be nice if there was a demand for it...

It's all over the roadsides around here. When the fruit starts dropping it's kinda like driving over a road made of softballs... nothing eats the damn stuff. Even bugs don't seem to touch it so I assume it's pretty poisonous.

Cut open the monkey brain and set itn a dish in the house. It has a pleasant citrus smell and is supposed to drive away spiders.

What we call horse apples are way different here. They look like regular apples but just taste like crap so you throw them at horses...

IMO bringing up old posts is fine. I see info I would never see otherwise. This one is timely too.

P.S. I realize you are not complaining.
I dont mind it either, it just confused me for a moment , thinking about heating oil and knowing that (now) Jim is in texas.

I would recommend anyone looking to save energy on heating and cooling. Look into a diy heat pump system. I installed one this year with my trump money. And my power company had a rebate for mobile homes built before 1991. Of up to 2400$ before taxes. My system ended up costing me 300$. Has dropped my summer power bill from over 300 a month, to 160 a month. I cant wait to see what it does for my winter power bill which is about the same as summer but the heat pump will be more efficient.

Just be aware that if it is cold and damp the coil is likely to ice over, and then you are trying to pull heat out of ice. I had that happen two years ago and ran up $1000 electric bill in a month.

Ouch that would hurt. Luckily I kept my forced air as a back up for situations like that or the couple days a year it gets below 10*f. Luckily those conditions dont happen too often in the lowland puget sound area. It also has a coil heater to prevent that from happening.

the grey-t escape
Ive been getting ready for winter myself, sealing up gaps in foundation with foam, taping ductwork, new furnace filter and stuff like that. Want to be prepared and not waiting until I need the house heated. Last weekend I pulled the a/c units and put them away. A year ago I redid part of the septic line from the house to the tank, its not very deep and I noticed the ground had settled quite a bit so I was concerned about the depth of ground to the line. I took the ranger trailer & escape and got a load of fill dirt from someone nearby that was digging a pond. have a good heaped up amount over the dip in the yard now, im sure it will settle over winter some, hopefully its enough depth now that if we have a really hard winter that line wont freeze, I dont know what I could do if that happens besides waiting for april. Have a kerosine heater now as a backup plan in case I need it, next I need a generator. Hate having to spend that much $ on something that wont get used very often but when its needed its a lifesaver.

I actually want to invest in a clean burning wall mounted propane heater just for power outages. Than once the ranger is back together dual alternator, dual batt, 5000 watt converter. For small electrical needs, and cheaper than a dedicated generator that gets ran every 4-5 years.
