How many miles have you guys seen a 4.0 rack up?
I'm thinking of doing a 4.0 build and would like to know the dependability of the motor.

Got 152xxx out of my ranger before i hydrolocked it. ****er ran strong, tried and true. i have a led foot and tendancy to drift/burnout/lockthetires/doughnuts/hitshit. haha yea that 4.0 ran great even with all the abuse i gave it and the only thing that broke was the belt one time.... untill water made its way into my cylinders.. just really depends on how you take care of your engine..

My 4.0 has 212,497 on the clock right now, and still runs like a clock. Bone cold weather, even into the negatives, starts right up first crank. Its had a heck of a rough life too... it gets the dog sh*t run out of it.

Its quite possible to see these motors last for a very very long time, especially if you keep up on oil changes, etc. Just the basic stuff that every motor needs.

I saw one at the bone yard today with 329,000 on the clock. The motor was out (sold) and written on the truck was "good motor & trans". I think that with proper maintenance and not too much abuse the 4.0 may go forever.

Rangers 01+ have the SOHC 4.0L, everything else has the OHV engine. I have 261,xxxkms on mine with just regular maintenance and an intake gasket change. It still runs great and I'm happy with it.

The 4.0's are tough as nails. Just like anything else though you have to keep them maintained. I've been running the heck out of mine the past 4 1/2 years. I change the oil every 3,000 and check all fluids every week or so, and she's ready for some more abuse..lol. The engine is as quiet as the day I brought it home. Actually it is probably the quietest 4.0 I know of and yet has the most miles of all the ones I know. Going on 231,000 miles now.

I think I will be going out on sunday to look, Ive been looking like crazy on craigslist. Im thinking I would like a 95-03 with not too high of mileage, 4x4 4cyl or v6 5speed with auto hubs. does a manual tranny 4x4 exist with auto hubs? this one caught my eye today http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/1042962003.html

Mine ran great at 158K when I sold it. It didn't burn a drop of oil between changes...after 4K miles, the oil would still be exactly at the full mark on the dipstick.

I suspect the intake manifold had a slight leak, but I never was able to track the leak down. Neither was the shop that pressure tested it. There would sometimes be droplets of coolant on the coil pack and stuff. Wherever the leak was, it didn't affect how the engine ran and it never overheated.

Head gaskets aren't a problem until you start overheating the engine. But if you had to replace head gaskets, then they are not hard to do if you got the proper set of tools and have some mechanical experience.

Mine's a young-un with only 170k on it... Engine misses sometimes (needs a tune-up)... Tranny makes noises, needs shift bushings and a 1-2 synchro at least, but i still drive it everyday (I had to add a quart of fluid to the tranny after I bought it)...

I mud-washed my rings and crank bearings at 265,175mi.

Before that it was running awesome, In fact a week before I ruined it, I raced and smoked a 07 4.0L Mustang, and it was getting 21mpg.
