The thing I don’t understand is, the day I bought it, I drove it home, and it wasn’t making any noise. Drove it about 20 miles on the highway to my house. Then I probably drove it about 100 miles in the next couple days before it started making noise, and as soon as it started making noise, I stopped driving it and started asking questions here. I’ve owned it for about 5 days now. Not sure where the bearings are. I’m not a mechanic. But I did see one set on the right side, passenger side, when I removed the diff cover. I did look at it as well as the gears inside, I didn’t see any missing balls, or broken carrier, ect in that bearing I could see. I’ve never opened and inspected a rear diff, but I am a machinist, and have an idea of what things should look like, and it all looked good inside. That’s not to say that the bearings are not smoked, but I didn’t see any evidence of it being smoked
If almost nothing came out the wine is probably from a cooked pinion bearing.
So I took it for a ride today, put about 40-50 miles on it. It doesn’t sound as bad as it was, but the noise is not totally gone. It start whining at about 35mph, when I let go of the gas, it stops whining, when I give it gas, it hums again. Defimetly better than it was. On the highway it wasn’t so bad, seems to whine at certain speeds. I think I have to add that friction modifier tomorrow morning and see if that makes any difference or not. I used the basic stp 80w90 gear oil, I probably should have used some synthetic, I may drive it around a little more then change the gear oil again, except this time use the good stuff, maybe Lucas. Any suggestions on what may help better? Thanks for all the info, really helpful. I guess if worse comes to worse, I’ll put a used rearend in it. If the damage is already done, will driving it like it isn’t now make any difference? Do you think I’ll break down or get stuck somewhere. That’s my main concern. I appreciate all the help guys. Thanks
