hydraulic hoses

I have a 1990 truck. I don't know if the hoses have ever been replaced. Should they be changed just because they are old?

If they aren't cracking, splitting, or leaking, you don't need to. I wouldn't look down on you for doing it. Absolutely nothing wrong with doing preventative maintenance and brake hoses aren't expensive. Just make sure you have wrenches made specifically for brake lines. They look like a box end wrench with a notch cut out of the end.

In my neck of the woods... every brake line and hose would have been replaced probably 10 years ago.

All the rubber hoses in a brake system degrade over time... yours are nearly 30 years old... I think it's probably time

I think I'll go ahead and change them. Of course since I'm doing that I might as well change the front pads, the anti skid module since the light has been on forever and a brake part mounted on the rear of the left front fender is leak ing so that should be fixed too.

Ok, I"m going to change everything. Should I bleed the lines before I change the ABS pump so that the old fluid doesn't get into the new pump? Or change everything and bleed at each wheel?

Change everything and then bleed. You are going to be introducing all kinds of air into the lines and any old fluid will get flushed out when you bleed the lines.

I don't think you actually have a an ABS pump... I believe what you refer to is ABS Modulator but I see it listed at advance auto as an ABS hydraulic unit. No pump... just solenoids to divert fluid if it senses rear brakes locked up. Use a little care when removing the line nuts from that unit if possible... I believe those are bastard size and you may have to reuse them when making new lines.

I changed the hoses, pads, and the hydraulic unit. I bled the system and now the brakes work as they should. But, the two little brakes lights now come on and the Rear ABS brake light still comes on. What to do? Should I change the wheel speed sensor, ABS Control Mod., or what?

Throw the light bulb away, it's clearly defective.

I think you're saying it doesn't matter. I changed the hydraulic module only because it was leaking
