Hi all. I've been lurking my way through the forums to get educated on these trucks, since I've been bitten by the "I need a new toy" bug. I still haven't found what I'm looking for...90s era 4x4s are very uncommon here for some reason. So I'm new to Rangers, but not trucks or Fords from the 80s-00s.

I've got a much better idea of what I'm looking at, thanks to this community.

Ideally a 93 or 94 (a little newer is fine too, but I like the older interior) extended cab, but the kicker is 4wd. Seems like a conversion isn't worth the effort. It'll mostly be for hunting, or going to my friend's place which is well off the pavement. And of course, to have another never-ending project.

Lol... I think most of us have at least one of those.

I wouldn't be afraid to run that up to 97... basically the same driveline. 98 went IFS. I would also be looking at 4.0L over the other options personally.

Good luck on your search... be prepared to pay up a little for the right one.

Yeah, that's the plan. I wouldn't turn away from a mid-90s truck if it had the right drivetrain. I'd definitely prefer a 4.0...I've got a lot of experience with the 3.0 boat anchor. If I had to settle for a 4-banger I'd start looking for swap options. I don't have a concrete plan, since it'll depend on what I buy and what else is available.

Looking at a 93 4x4 tomorrow, extended cab, standard bed, 3.0/auto, power windows. It does need some work, but the interior looks good in the pictures, and the body looks straight. I'm not worried about PW regulators or a trans case actuator, so here's hoping!

Well, the price was (after brief negotiation) right, so I trailered it home. It's actually a 4.0, and was otherwise pretty much as described. Nothing is perfect, but everything is in better shape than the average Ranger for sale around here. And it had a title, which is the rarest feature.

To get it street-ready, I need to replace the shocks, get a headlight working, and weld up some crappy exhaust work that leaks. Then I can worry about the t-case motor, one dead fog lamp, pass door window regulator, clean up the door locks (pretty gummy feeling) and other little things.

Good find. Look forward to following your build. Just a heads up. We do like pictures haha.

I'm the same way...I'm also one of the crazy people who posts the results when a problem gets solved!
