I have a 98 Ranger 2WD with a 4.0 manual transmission that needs replaced.I can get a M5R1HD transmission from a 2wd 02 explorer cheap and wanted to find out if it will bolt right in.Most places list them as 01 to 11 only but have been told several times they do bolt right in as the bell pattern is unchanged?Anyone have any knowledge on this?I am curious if the input shaft stayed the same.

As long as it’s a M5OD-R1 and not a M5OD-R4 they used in some 02-03 Explorers... They had a dual mass flywheel and a 26 spline input shaft.

I havent heard of the "R4" designation yet.I thought all of the manuals attached to the 4.0 SOHC engines were called the M5R1HD for heavy duty?.Im not sure on the input shaft splines as its still in the vehicle.

Most people never heard of the “R4”, it’s not very common.
M5OD-R1HD or the earlier M5OD-R1 from a 4.0L will work. There really isn’t anything heavy duty about the HD vs the non-HD.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

We had a f150 harley edition as a work truck... bought it at an auction dirt cheap in pristine shape. It was a disgusting peice of crap within a year. Pissed off alot of people destroying that truck. It's in a heep of rusted dented metal now. :icon_rofl:
