My credo
I'll do it myself
This will sound like a dumb question but I must ask, Is there any reason why we can't by pass the computer and use a switch to shift from one gear to the next? It seems we should be able to run some wires from the transmission into the cab and connect them to switches and change gears as we decide.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I don't believe you can shift an automatic transmission as well as a computer can.

Yes. Its not as simple as "turn on third gear". There are multiple shift solenoids that change state in most shifts, some turn on, some turn off.

You would need to know which ones do what during each shift, and hit them all nearly simultaneously for each shift.

On your A4LD the first three gears are still fully mechanical, only 4th gear and the torque converter clutch are electronically controlled, and so you could do just that. But it doesn't work on any of the newer fully electronic transmissions.
