My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
Compared to the ecoboost the Mazda setup is less then ideal.

You will have to bridge mount the engine.

I would consider use of an ecoboost setup. Though Chris Brooks at hp tuners can likely unlock your PCM.

The plumbing sux. The oil pan situation to use an unlifted 4x4 is not easy.

They are cool engines. But suck to work on.

PATS can be deleted with an aftermarket tuner (like SCT) fairly easily for a couple hundred bucks. But that doesn't help you with the direct injection issue.

Additionally, the DISI hangs the turbo and associated plumbing extended past the flywheel. That would be the back of the engine in a Ranger and there's very little firewall clearance with a normal Duratec 2.3 there. Maybe 6 inches between the back of the head and the firewall.

MS3/DISI engine:

Ranger 2.3 Duratec:

I'm guessing that in addition to PATS, and controlling the DISI direct injection somehow, you'd also need to use completely different exhaust and intake manifolds, which means new intercooler, moving the throttle body and wastegate (wiring), etc. Really all you'd end up using from the DISI would be the long block. And if you're doing all of that work and expense, you could just boost the Duratec that came in the donor truck and skip the expensive Direct Injection controller, wiring, etc.

Thank you, I love this. I love getting write ups like this.

clearance between head/block and firewall seems easy to fix.

the turbo piping issue would be hard, but not impossible.

I’ll definitely keep this swap in mind if I happen to come across another, but for now I’ll go the turbo the regular motor route. Though it is a while out.
