My Tach is not accurate. 95 B4000 4.0 4x4. 5spd man.
Idles at 400-500. Max revs 3500. Any suggestions? I've had the instr panel out to check connections. ( I know the 4.0 ohv is not a high rev engine. But I'm pretty sure it goes higher than that.) any help is appreciated.... considering buying a tach but wanted to see if there is any fix to mine

Most likely a Tachometer needle issue vs a signal issue, i.e. someone may have had the cluster out and put needle back on in wrong position

There is a wiring difference on the cluster connectors for 4cyl and V6 for the tachometers, but that is on the wiring side not the cluster side, there is an added Ground wire for V6 engine Ranger tachs, Clusters are the same

Unfortunately 1995 Ranger Clusters are unique, 1994 and 1996 won't work, has to be 1995 Ranger or B-series

In the 1995 instrument cluster wiring you will see first 2 wires are ground and the Tach signal from computer, ground would not be there for 4cyl model
Tan/yellow wire can be tapped for an added tach

In 1996 the wiring for connectors has changed, tach signal is now on pin 15 and ground for V6 is now on pin 8 on lower connector, and its actually labelled as V6 ground only, this wire would not be there in a 4cyl model
1996 thru 2003 clusters are all the same wiring

The wires and connectors used are the same, just wires are in different positions in 1995, so you could re-pin the wires that are different and use a 1996-2003 Cluster

The engine was swapped out with a previous owner. Circa 1999-2000.( a ton of stuff was screwed up. Long story, but I have systematically fixed everything but this tach. I do not know what year the engine is. But all wiring. Vacuum, Egr, and any other thing I have looked up has matched using 1995 4.0l ohv. Replacement parts also.

Thank you! I have lots of wiring diagrams but none as clear as these for the inst panel. Thank you so much

Just a final note on this chapter of the Tach related issue. I could not find any wiring issue. It is a 95 instrument panel.
So I bought a Motormeter 3 3/8" tach that also has a digital temp and oil pressure readout at the bottom. It was a perfect fit in front of the existing tach. Thanks again for your help.

My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
Mine is doing the same thing, except its stuck at 2200-3500 rpm and goes up from there.

Started doing it suddenly one day. Fixed itself for a short time, and then came back and stayed. I haven't had time to mess with it, but pretty sure its probably a ground issue.

Anyone have an idea what would happen if on a 95, instead of cutting the tan yellow wire and connecting it to the rpm wire for the tach, you spliced into it? Would it read half rpm?

Wouldnt hurt to try...just splice it half ass real quick to test, wire it in better if it works...its all fused...my M.O.
