Im not sure about the flywheel year (I assume its original) but I do know Im have a later 80s ranger 5 speed. If that sounds right.

I know what it looks like and went searching on RockAuto for rebuilt ones that looked like mine. The later model ranger 5 speeds looked the most like it.

that could require a different starter. but with it working for so long i would really have to see it in person.

i have run into spacing issues. but without actually seeing your setup i cant make any determinations...i would pop the cover off of the sol and make sure the lil fawker is doing its job.....and force it too if it was not. i have had to do that before....too many times mudding...
haha, Yes the all mightly mudding. Great fun! haha

What do you mean by pop off the cover of the sol? I can try and take and post photos or videos on my rig?

Ive heard people putting 3.0 and 4.0 starters on this truck or changing the drive gear to a 10 or 11 tooth. I tried to dismantle my rockauto starter to see how difficult it would be compared to the videos Ive seen of people doing it. Ive got zero clue how id get to without damaging anything.
I also looked at the 3.0 and 4.0 starters and the bolt pattern isnt the same so I dont know how they do it.

In my first post the I put a link the line of test 'this starter' if you need/want to see the rockauto starter.

watch it. does it work? if not you can pry down on the backbone or see-saw depending on where your from... to engage the ring gear.

it is drawn down with current..so look carefully at how it works to keep from shorting it out.....just pry on the back bone...

OK, So I need to bend the copper connections up or down? I'm still confused. Sorry

And when Its on the truck, This solenoid is on top. Meaning I cant gain access to it phyicially or visually when it's bolted on. Thats what Im confused by. Because I dont know what i should be doing when I cant see the solenoid while its mounted.

Also, Thanks for helping at this hour!

well i am checking out....

you can see it on the truck.....dont mess with any tabs.

when i said bent screwdriver...i meant it....long driver bent to hook around covered with electrical tape. you can wedge the arm to engage the pinion if its not doing it on its own.....

but. not sure its a good idea to tell you that.....make sure there is someone controlling the vehicle.

on my 302 it was easier then with a 2.8. considering i have held starters in place before to start these things when the loose bolts broke off there isnt much there...

just manually checking it with no power should at least confirm it can go full stroke...

Sorry for my confusion. I couldn't tell if you were talking about using a bent screwdriver to adjust something or to manually move the pinion. Thats where I was getting lost.
When I say I can't get to or see anything that's regarding the solenoid. I meant it. On the 2.8 the area around it and SUPER cramped. I might do what you suggested with pushing the pinion out with zero power and do it manually and see where it lands and goes. That could be something I could attempt for sure.
