I have a 2000 ranger with a 3.0 and a couple of weeks ago stopped at a friends house turned it off and had to get it jumped got it home , when you turn the key you would just get a click ,took the battery and starter to advance tested good, changed the positive cable ,installed new terminals and checked the wire ends, the pats key was broke off in the ignition cylinder but putting the black part in it worked , now not even a click , the lights all work I have a ecm but to try it does it need to be programmed to my vin# ? I have other ignition switches can I pull the transponder thing out of the broken keys and put them in the other keys or do I need a locksmith? I checked all the fuse and relays, im stumped

I agree it AlwaysFloored, clean the ground cable connections at the block and battery. If that doesn't fix it, the ignition wire may have a short or be broken internally somewhere.

You can bolt it to any CLEAN metal surface on the Block

Starter motor needs 60-75amps, which is why the positive and ground cables are so large, alternator is also putting out 40-80amps when its running

So good ground is needed

Don't over think it
There is a small starter relay in the engine fuse box, it should "click" closed when key is turned to START

If the THEFT light is not Flashing FAST with key ON then PATS is not the problem

Computer(ECU/PCM) has nothing to do with starter motor, so not the problem

Rapid flash means PATS has disabled start up

Let it flash for 45-60 seconds and it will start to flash a 2 digit code number
Always starts with 1, then the second digit, i.e. 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, ect............

Then it repeats

Video of the flashing and code here:

In a 2000 Ranger there is a PATS module above glove box

After PATS check is deleted from Computer you may need to access that module to Ground the Starter Relay in the engine fuse box
Or find that wire in the engine bay coming from the PATS Module and cut and ground it
This is assuming that the starter motor doesn't activate with key turned to START, this part of the anti-theft system was hit and miss in 1999/2000 Ranger V6s, but standard on 2001 and up

In the diagram its the Pink/orange stripe wire on pin 1 of the module, its a ground if key passes the test which allows starter relay to be activated
It might be dark blue/orange wire at the relay or PATS module
