oil preference/recommendation

I have 64K on my 2001 V6 3.0L 2wd and just bought it from a lil ol lady.

I went synthetic 5w-30.

I too researched this and found that you can switch back and forth between synthetic and regular oil with no issues, but I will be using Mobil 1 5w-30 because everything I read says its the best. Its cheap at Costco when on sale.
Im still going to change mine between 5K and 10K. I know you can go longer but thats just me.

Im also using Red Line Fuel Treatment.

Cheapest “full synthetic” I can find. Usually Harvest King or Supertech. Run it for 10k. Generally use 10W-30 as, being in central Florida, it never gets cold enough to need a 5W-30. If a 0W-30 or 5W-30 is on sale cheaper I will use it but prefer the more shear stable 10W-30.

I find k&n makes the best filters imo, and they are high flow so it gives a bit more oil pressure, so more oil pressure is always good, plus i replaced the orange can of death that it had with a k&n with a welded nut

If your oil filter increases oil pressure that's a really crappy filter...

Pressure is caused by restriction of volume. The pump moves a certain volume and pressure is caused by the the restrictions to that volume. I.E Putting your thumb over a garden hose increases pressure. So if you put a different filter on and oil pressure goes up, your new filter is more restrictive. Not less.

You could just run a straight pipe between the inlet and outlet port of the oil filter mount thereby bypassing it and not have oil pressure issues unless you have other issues. I.e your pump if weak. An oil filter should NOT effect your pressure that much. Especially be able to make your pressure "dangerously low".

Oil filters do not change the volume of oil being moved. And should not increase pressure unless they are too restrictive.

Putting your thumb on a garden hose doesn't change the volume of water coming out, it increases pressure. So if you have low volume to begin with you wont have pressure until you increase volume more. (I.e more pressure).

Oil pumps are rated in volume. So if you have poor volume the only way to get the pressure up is to add restriction. This is not a solution to the problem of poor volume.

K&N is a good filter for sure. So is PureOne, Mobil 1, Wix, Motorcraft, and I know I’m missing some others. They are all made by the same manufacturer with a good anti flow back valve, metal filter caps, good filter media, and an actual spring to hold the filter cartridge in place.

The orange can of death you speak of is certainly a garbage filter.

I agree fram sucks. I use motorcraft because they are the only one I've found that uses the proper anti drain back and bypass system for a ford engine. And they cost about 3 bucks. Change them on time and it doesnt matter. These newer oils rated for 5, 7.5, or 10k miles dont take into account that the oil filters are still only rated for 3k.

i dont use motor craft for one reason, any dealer near me never has the filter i need, and sometimes they cost to much, but one reason i use K&N is the 1in welded nut, that was the selling point for me

Why does the nut matter? If you need a tool to remove a filter you put it on too tight.

Look on amazon for for motorcraft, they are always on sale for 3-4 bucks from the 910s to the 1a.

Neither are the vehicle manufacturers since they are the ones setting the 7,500 and 10,000 mile oil change intervals in their vehicles.

I’m still changing mine every Spring and Fall, regardless of what the oil life meter says. Change it and reset the meter. Done.

Since we are on the subject of oil filters and this still pertains to oil, why the hate on Fram filters? This question comes from a genuine not understanding on why some don't like them. Is there an issue with the media used?

If I can keep my higher mileage motor running longer by swapping to a Motorcraft filter I have no issues with it, I just would like to understand how these brands differ and what makes one better than the other.

There have been quite a few respectable and unrespectable people that have done oil filter autopsies to see how they were built. Fram has cheap filter media, the anti flow back valve often doesn't prevent flow back, the media end cap is a piece of heavy paper glued to the end of the filter media, and the spring is just a piece of bent metal. I could refer you to differnt places like Bob is the Oil Guy and Project Farm as examples but I would rather you find out for yourself with your own search so your decision isn't squewd by my biases.

There is a BIG difference in filter build quality from cheap filters to good ones. K&N is a bit over the top for what the average guy needs and one does tend to pay for the name as well but there is no doubt it is a good filter.
