One key, no code. How do I get it?

Picked up my B2500 tonight, but I already have a problem: I have but ONE key for it. I'd like to be able to get the key code for it and have others made, but my buddy was the 2nd owner and hasn't got the little card/tab/whatever that held the key code information. If I hit up the local dealer, is he going to be able to divine the key code from the VIN?

TIA.

actually we dont even need the vin par say. the key is cut off your current key, inserted into the ignition, then the computer is hooked up and your PCM is commanded to program the new key. it takes about 30 minutes total and will cost around $80.

keep in mind that if you just want and extra door lock key, you can have any hardware store cut a key with a suitable blank for a few bucks.

My 2005 Ranger does not have the encoded key. It has no PAT's system, no blinking LED on dash. 4 cylinders thru 2000 had no PAT's either I believe. Just had the key cut at hardware store.

Thanks for the replies - I had the key cut as a trace without the code. Works fine.

FYI- the dealer wanted $25 just to look up the code...and $9 a key!

Think $25 is bad just to look up a key code? I think the local one here wants close to $100 to program a new one. Glad it all worked out right for you.

When I worked for Volkswagen, we'd look up key codes and not charge unless the guy was being a PITA. Radio codes as well. Just seems alien to have someone charge for looking up a simple code that takes less than 5 minutes...

If you really want to be cheap about it. You can have 2 keys made without the code. Then just glue the key with the code under the steering wheel. How do you think they do remote starters?

Hello,

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger that I bought a week ago. The vehicle came with only one key. This not a OEM key and the only thing written on it is iLco. So, I've been looking around for options to get another key, in case I lose the only key I have.

I came across this posting:

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/patskey.php

Does this have any merit? If it does, then it would be possible for me to buy blank PAT key like this:

https://www.ikeyless.com/vehicles/Ford/Ranger/2002/1000378/

I can get it cut buy a lock-smith using my existing key. Does anyone have experience doing something like this?

Thanks

Thanks

Most of your bigger locksmiths can fix you right up, just give them a call to find out if they do what your wanting. Lots of them even up here in Anchorage do it.

Oh and holy back from the dead thread lol.
