I've been wanting a new lever action for a while. I currently have an old Winchester 94 30-30 which I love but it's technically not legal to shoot anywhere here and 30-30 is not a great caliper for target shooting.

Henry makes a decent looking gun in .38 special / .357 mag. .38 is cheap and is more fun on the range in my opinion but ive never fired 38/357 in anything but my ruger gp100 and never owned a henry.

Thoughts or opinions on henry rifles in general and on using .38/.357 in this type of gun? I don't hunt, just target shoot but I'm thinking it might be a good choice for my new "farm gun" to put down the occasional skunk or cayote...

New price is about $650 but I've found plenty of nice used ones for 300-400.

An older Marlin 94 would be good too, they have a loading gate on the side of the receiver which I would prefer. Even the 30-30 Henrys have the stupid tube loading thing.

This year Henry started making model that has both the loading gate and the magazine tube loading.

Agreed lol, while I have never owned one, I have heard great thing about Henry Rifles. They take a lot of pride in their work and it is not difficult to talk to the CEO of company if the need arises.

Many 22 LR shooters love their levers. I'm sure it would be ok with any Big Boy line as well.

I was kind of intrigued by .410 bore Lever action -- always thought that would be a need truck gun etc.

Also any "JM" stamped Marlin is holding their value quite well now. Since it has become "Remlin" (Remington and Marlin Merger) the QC was spotty at the beginning, but I believe it may have gotten better.

Eh tube loading doesn't really bother me. If it were for hunting or defense yea I'd definitely want a loading gate. But like I said I only target shoot.

Yeah, I was in on that rodeo. I would have a hard time buying a new one.

Then you know firsthand, BTW I also have a H&R sidekick. Looks just like yours in that other thread.

Any particular reason you want a handgun caliber for target shooting?? Some of the hopped up rimfires are fun guns to shoot and cost considerably less to actually shoot. I have a 17 hmr on my short list of next lever actions. I owned one in target barrel bolt action, but I mostly hunt and shoot clay pigeons with shotguns. Shooting targets from a bench isn't so much my thing.

I shot a Henry 22LR a few years ago. I remember it being accurate and really smooth and light. I liked it enough I think if I were to ever buy another 22 I would buy a Henry. I have a couple older Winchester lever guns one from each of my grandfathers... love them both and the critters that have fallen with either. Neither of these well used lever guns are as smooth as a Henry.

Just looking for something different but functional. :dunno:

I have .22 and 22wmr guns which are fun plinkers but .38 and .357 are fairly inexpensive rounds and just seem like a "neat" match for a small rifle like lever action.

You can hunt deer with a .357mag in some areas too (new for Iowa a couple years ago)

Shotgun, muzzle loader, and bow are the only things you can hunt with in this state. Absolutely no rifles (accept muzzle loader) or handguns. You can use .22lr to kill animals in traps or varmint hunt.

This is why I don't hunt. It's not practical in my state... once in a while I go over to PA and deer hunt with my brother in law with my m1a. Not a great deer gun but it certainly does the job.

So I stick to target shooting mostly and love the oddball stuff.

This is what I'm looking at. About to pull the trigger... (see what I did there) on a used one from gunbroker.com. tonight. I think I'll end up getting it for about 500, comes with a sling. A cleaning kit, and a speed loader (no idea what that is on a tube fed lever action).
