So i have a 96 ranger, 2.3 4x4 manual trans, belive its the Mazda M5OD-R1. A while ago driving down the highway it lost power for a second, then when i shifted out of gear i couldn't get it back in...I think its the trans since i cant shift into a gear even when truck is off, and the clutch is relatively new....Is there anything else i can check. Also if it is the trans is is best just to swap in one of the same or is there a cheaper/easier option?? Thanks!

not being able to shift into any gears with the truck off really makes me think its the tranny thats gone... with the 2.3 and 4x4 really the only, and best option is to get another M5OD for a 2.3 4x4. They can be a little hard to find but it will be a bolt in repair that is relatively easy to do even in the driveway.

A transmission problem that hoses ALL gears (including 4th) is relatively unlikely, especially if "losing power" wasn't accompanied by some hellacious noises.

It IS possible, but before going out and buying a transmission, remove the inspection cover and make sure the clutch is disengaging.

And new is not the same as good.

you have to have the 4x4 or have the output shaft from your trans installed.

any ranger 2.3 4x4 transmission will work from 90ish when they came out with the M5OD up to 96 or 97 when they stopped putting the 4-cyl with 4x4.
