Question about exhaust resonator

I'm replacing the muffler on my BII w/2.9L, as the thing pretty much blew itself apart (putting a Magnaflow muffler on it).
Question: Should I replace that resonator thing that's after the muffler? Or should I just swap it out completely for a straight piece of pipe? (discovered it has a bunch of debris rattling around in it)
What does it do exactly anyway? Does it change the backpressure much? Will it be a lot louder without it? (I don't mind a little bit of exhaust sound, but I don't want to go deaf inside the truck while on the freeway).
I've been told a cheap glasspack can be substituted for it also, good idea?

Looking for some suggestions (haven't messed around with exhaust much).

I'd say take it off. We cut the resonators off my buddies Buick and it sounded no different. I think all it does is change the sound/tone of the exhaust but doesn't quiet it.

Yeah that's what I'm leaning toward doing. I guess if it does end up too noisy or "ricey" sounding I can always cut the pipe back out and splice something back in there.

FWIW bigger pipe will make it sound deeper, 2 1/2" seems the standard

From what ive gathered from the cobalt ss forum i hang around, the resonator eliminates the "rasp" and that ricer sound common to a lot of 4 and 6 cylinder engines

I doubt cutting it out would hardly make a noticeable difference.

This is exactly what I don't want. God I just f'in' hate that sound!:shout:

Alright, I dunno... :bawling: I guess I'm gonna leave it out for now... see what happens. Looking at both "resonators" and "glasspacks", they both seem to be pretty much the same damn thing, so hopefully I can find something real quick, cheap & easy if I can't stand it.

ill give you from my personal experiance.

i have a 98 explorer sohc 4.0

welded in a thrush di/so muffler with the stock piping in place.

left the resonator at first. sounded just like i wanted, nice rumble. no drone inside at all.

descided to remove the resonator. and i HATED IT.

it sounded great from the outside. but it droned so bad it gave me a headache.

i ended up putting the stock muffler back on.


in my opinion. replace the resonator, or put a short glasspack on.

youll thank me later.

Maybe.... SUV's, like the BII and Explorer, channel the sound differently because the passenger compartment is above the muffler, etc...unlike a truck as it's under the bed.

Guess I never really thought of it that way. Maybe in your case you should either leave it on or find a replacement.

Well where were you this morning? And yesterday? :bawling:

It's all together now without a resonator... Haven't started it yet, but I guess I'll find out I hate it soon enough.

Do appreciate the info though. Guess I have to ask what prompted you to remove it if it was how you wanted it?

i just saw the thread tonite

i thought it would have a more throatier sound if i removed it.


curiosity got the best of me. i regret it. but glad i put my stock muffler on.

i just noticed you said you running a magnaflow muffler

it should be fine then

magnaflow says that there mufflers never have the resonance that chambered mufflers have.

my bad.

Well, that gives me some hope then. Tomorrow I should be able to take it for a drive and see what it sounds like.



Edit:
Didn't see Ranger44's post... Yeah that was one of my concerns (resonating through the floor). Should be easy enough to just cut a section out and stick a glasspack/resonator in there if needed though.

Well, drive update... It's not too bad, throaty with a distinct V6 purr, but doesn't seem overbearing (the 5th gear clattering of my FM146 tranny is still louder lol). No raspiness or snappiness at high RPM or when I get on it (thankfully).
I'll need to get it on the freeway for a good distance to see if the droan gets to be annoying though (that transmission is currently the attention-getter inside).

In case anyone wonders, the muffler I used was a Magnaflow pt# 11224 (4x9x14" oval, center/offset) 2" (stock) piping from the muffler back (exiting straight out the rear with a very slight downturn), and a very short piece of 2¼" welded between the stock cat & muffler.
