SOLVED: Rattling/tinging Noise in 2WD, stops in 4WD (CV Driveshaft Joint)
Hey everyone,
I have a 2009 Ranger, 4x4.
The last week or two, it's begun making a "tinging" or rattling type noise while moving.
Initially it sounded to me like a small metal part dragging and bouncing around on the pavement, so much so that I pulled over and looked under the truck to see what was hanging. But it's not that
Going out on a limb, it sounds as though maybe the very edges of the gears are interfering/clanging together without actually being engaged, or something similar.
Some information:
- Does not change on braking.
- Sound present in 2WD, but goes away once I engage 4WD.
- 4WD seems to be working normally.
- Sound changes with vehicle speed (not necessarily louder, just relative to speed)
- Sound is present even when coasting in neutral.
- Sound is present, while coasting with the engine off.
- Is not audible until ~20mph (~30-40kph).
- It does not sound like a typical wheel bearing.
- Does not appear to be coming from one side nor the other.
I will start by checking the front differential oil level (though I've not noticed any leaks or spots on the driveway). I will also be checking the u-joints, though, it doesn't sound/feel like that.
Any advice is much appreciated.
