(98 3.0L 4x4) I have alot of "play" in the rear end. when up on the lift, I can move the wheel by hand and notice what I think is too much play. Also have the "cl-clunk" when shifting from park to drive. what is it and what can/should I do?

what do u mean by play? like, u can move the wheel in and out a little bit?
no. More like when I turn the wheel left or right, it takes a few inches(seemingly) for the other side to catch up and start moving.

the play in the axle is probably normal. they can have a surprising amount of backlash and still be fine. the clunk you have though is probably the slip joint in the drive shaft. there was a TSB about it, but i cant find a link. basically the fix was to disassemble the slip joint and re-grease with a special grease.

RE-GREASE!? THAT'S IT!? With what a teflon or lithium or something? Do you know the TSB #?

says to use motorcraft ptfe grease

i cant find any info on the rear axle play, somebody else will chime in on it though. it's just backlash in the r&p or spiders (both, i'm sure) and shouldnt have any impact on drivability
Hey thanks guys! :icon_cheers: I will read through the links you posted and see what I can do here. The pumpkin box needs a little fluid exchange at the very least any ways.

on a 98 there is no slip joint on the d shaft and if its a 7.5 with many miles its prolly going to be the pinion bearings and or wore out spider gears, these rear ends are built with a good bit of backlash but the clunk is something totally different IMO

That clunk you here is probably when your on a hill right? Well its the drivetrain binding up, then you have to pop it out of gear, which makes that noise. To avoid this, follow these simple steps:
come to stop
set e brake
put car in park.
When leaving do this:
Put car in park
release e brake.

What is the back lash spec on the 98? I would imagine that it is somewhere around .012 - .018 in or so. I would think.

Yes there is, the transfer case has a fixed yoke output, so something must be there to compensate for travel of the suspension. It is on the front portion of the shaft in the black boot. That clunk is a very common problem.:icon_thumby:
