It seems that OEM rear main seals (part number F5TZ-6701-A) have a metal sleeve that is pushed on the crank with the seal. Is this the proper seal to use? Is there another OEM part number that does not have this metal sleeve?

I know there are after market seals that can be used that don't have the sleeve but I have heard a lot of complaints about them leaking. I don't want to have to do this again.

I doubt it. That's a first revision part number that probably superseded and replaced anything that doesn't come with a sleeve.

I think Ford's assumption is that if the seal is leaking it happened because there is a groove worn in the crank, so it needs a sleeve.

Thanks for the information. I am leery about using anything other than OEM. Now I need to look into seeing if I can find the tool to rent for installing it. I really don't want to pay high dollars for something I will use only once.

day two no leaks. you dont need a special tool to reinstall. take the old sleeve, flip it around and use the flat side to tap the seal into place! works perfect
