I can modulate brakes quite well, been doing it for a very long time and prevented many accidents. Nonetheless I’m happy to have ABS. There are always those times when you get startled, and uneven traction can trip you up.

As for paying attention - well you can think that and how your awesome skills will save the day, but it’s BS. It never comes from where you expect it, and instead of saving the day you’ll wake up when they’re cutting the door off your car, having never seen a thing nor reacted in any way.

For all practical purposes I died in a nasty wreck in 1990. Sure, I was paying proper attention, signaled and moved left for the guy who was merging on. Why would I be looking to the left for the guy coming across the grass just behind the bridge supports? And I’ve messed up plenty of times since then - some of them saved by my driving skills, but I’ll take help from ABS.

I'm on the abs bandwagon too. There is no way that a human can pump the brakes as fast as working abs.
If I understand how abs works, there is s sensor that reads wheel speed. As soon as the wheel isn't turning then the abs module let's off brake pressure until the wheel starts turning again...repeat as needed. I'm not sure of how many times a second this happens but it's much, much faster than a human can do it.

That's how I understand it, yes. And, you're right. ABS detects wheel spin, and releases the brakes, faster than even the best driver ever could, because it's controlled by a computer.

Yes computers fail. But, *giggle* so do humans, especially when they get old, or they're tired, or distracted, or any other myriad of reasons. But, I agree, floored, I'd rather have ABS than not.

An acquaintance (he’s definitely not a friend) once told me it wasn’t his fault he got in an accident... it was the cars fault because it didn’t have ABS. He also blamed his parents for not buying him a car with ABS.

This has gotten funny.... ABS is on every new vehicle for a reason... It's safer than non-ABS brakes. Cars are built to a high safety standard so things like traction control, abs, camera's, and sensors are all built onto vehicles to keep the people inside safe. period. Everyone thinks they are the best driver and they would never get into an accident because they would see it coming but that is pure BS. We totaled our van due to someone pulling out in front of us and we had no time to stop. Wouldn't have mattered if it had abs or not (it did BTW) because the guy pulled out in front of us. I had enough time to say "stop, stop, stop, st... BANG! I've drove in plenty of vehicles with touch screens and they are not distracting at all.. No more distracting than reaching for your yoohoo bottle rolling on the floor... To think a 20-30 yr old vehicle will stop better than a new vehicle is ridiculous. The sensors on the new car will be stopping the vehicle before you even think about hitting the brake pedal. It's time to accept the touch screens like you did the computer. I'm sure you hated computers when they first came out too but now look at ya, posting on forums and getting into internet fights. As to thinking no one will steal your car because it's a manual, I guess your day might come when you learn the hard way. Yes, some thefts have been stopped due to manual transmissions but that doesn't mean it will deter everyone. It takes 2 seconds to lock or unlock a car door. How long do you think it would take to call police and tell them your car was stolen and track down your car? If its a nice car then you will probably never see it again and all you had to do was take a second to lock the door.... THE WORLD IS NOT AN HONEST PLACE AND IF YOU GIVE PEOPLE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT IT WILL BITE YOU IN THE ASS. Just saying.

People (including myself) has avoided this very same scenario numerous times without ABS.

You wanna call my vehicles "heaps" but atleast they are driven competently.

This is complete and utter nonsense.

You may 'think' you're a better driver and capable of outstopping ABS, but it's delusional.

You -cannot- measure slip at an individual wheel and correct for it point by point. It's simply not possible. With wheel speed sensors and a controller to monitor them, it's trivial for a computer to do so.

Whether or not you acknowledge reality doesn't change the facts of the matter.

Its been proven ABS does not stop any faster then non abs on slick surfaces, it just prevents lock up to allow steering.

So....what im understanding here is ABS does stop further in situations where abs is most "liked" (low traction situations), only time it has a stopping advantage is when traction is good.

If traction is good a skilled/attentive driver should have no problems getting stopped or out of the way.
