What has happened to Country Music? Watched the ACM awards tonite and saw the sad state of the music and the performers. Country is not skinny-jeans and sneakers or blinding light shows.

Country music is soulful, shit-kicking, honest, patriotic and fiery. None of that tonite. Did I get old and miss something?

It has been that way for years very few songs on the radio worth a crap anymore.

I have found a few stations that still play some of the good ones, but generally I find myself listening to music on my phone

Love Thy Neighbor
About 55 years ago I spent many hours and days on end with my Aunt and Uncle who were big country music fans and they would play "CFGM 1310 Country Radio" pretty much every waking minute. At that time there was a distinction between styles that was unmistakable.

Steel guitar, fiddle, acoustic guitar, and harmonica where the mainstay instruments and twangy sultry voices singing ballads and catchy dance tunes were the norm. I think they still contain those key ingredients but the stage presence and musical content has been beefed up...that's what I see and hear...

In the early 90s I was engaged to a girl who loved country music (and horses) and I reacquainted myself with the music. There was still quite a distinction at that time too...so it was somewhere between then and now that there has been a bigger shift towards what we have today.

I have to admit that I have not been paying attention but did notice lately that the music wasn't as pure and simple as it used to be...but I'm not much of a music critic other than I know what I want to hear...and that can vary between Orchestras playing symphony classics to the latest acapella cover of Hallelujah by Pentatonix...

I found this article online that sort of gives a quick overview of the evolution of country music...I found it after I wrote the above personal perspective to see how much I was out of touch...lol.

The disappointment is my fault, I guess. I wasn't paying attention and the world changed.

He is a pretty good one IMO. Sings pretty good and has relatable songs.

FGL and the like are the ones that are crap. Also what the radio stations grind into even more worthlessness once every hour on the hour.

I have one kind of local station that mixes in old with the new that is decent if I can get reception with my headphones while working outside. They are a ways away and it can be touch and go to get reception at times though.

Thank God, I received a grace digital internet radio for Christmas. With 20,000 + radio stations available, I can pick and choose the stations that are more to my liking. I don't have to listen to "New Trash" Country.

I know, to each his own. I'll stick to old country and Dr. Hook for the good, sappy stuff!

I think you need to go back in time a bit and revise your statement to: "They kicked Willie, Merle, George and Conway out and let in Garth Brooks..." About the time that this clip was no longer culturally relevant :)

the late 80's is about when real Country Music contracted a terminal illness... it died of it in the early 2000's. from there on it has been really formulaic and crappy.

This article and video below really drives home that point:

Agreed. I don't miss the big hair and rhinestone suits but it was better than skinny-jeans and sneakers. Also, it could just be my hearing fading but I can't understand most of the words these days. Todays music seems to lack purity and soulfulness.

A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
Country has sucked since 2000 or so, when guys like rascal flatts and keith urban came into it. There were a few bright spots from 00-10, after 10 it got flushed right down the toilet.

I want to hear a song and imagine im in some little smokey honky tonk somewhere, not a hay field filled with bud light drinking teenagers watching sundresses in headlights.

Go to the play store and do a search for "duke fm", youll thank me later.

Canadian country can be good, Corb Lund and The Dead South are pretty interesting. Rusty might like the Roadhammers too. "Mud" is good.

IMO a lot of country music has gotten really rapey in the last few years. It's all "oh, you are so hot I'm gonna get you drunk so you sleep with me".

I personally like Eric Church. He might wear skinny jeans from time to time, but I don't have to see them on the radio. He isn't Merle, but I like most of his stuff. The Sinners Like Me album is the first thing I throw on when I hit the road for any longer trip.
