Hey guys,

I have a wiring/rattle sound coming from the bell-housing (2.9 into a Mitsubishi trans). It is most notable at idle and I think it goes away when I drive (could be I just cant hear it). Pushing in the clutch doesn't change things, I can still hear it. Ideas? My first thought is loose flywheel. It couldn't be the input shaft bearing, right? That would only make noise with clutch engaged.

That's what I thought. Gotta pull the tranny anyhow to change a seal.

I used the old flywheel and bolts when I installed the engine. Shouldn't have. Didn't use locktight either

I'm guessing it's a broken pressure plate finger, or a broken clutch disc spring.

Maybe, but they were brand new when I put them in less than 10 miles ago. Still could be though for sure.

So I am pretty sure the sound has nothing to do with the flywheel. The other day I lost the plug that goes in the driver side exhaust manifold. It must have been loose ever since I installed the engine. When I lost it, s**t got loud quick. I used a 1/2 inch pipe plug to close up the hole. Not only did the nasty exhaust sound go away, so did my rattle whirring sound. I think the sound was actually coming from the Y-pipe. That plug must have been rattling in there and the sound was reverberating through the exhaust - making it sound like it was coming from the bell housing. Who woulda thunk it?
