cheap test, try manually rocking it.
park on hard smooth pavement, leave it in 1st gear without the parking brake set.
grab the top of a front tire (gives you leverage) and start rocking it.
get a rhythm going, start the opposite pull just as it bounces off the stop.
maybe also try 4th gear because it's straight thru thus eliminates some tranny parts. the engine may turn a bit in 4th.
don't tell the neighbors what you're doing, keep 'em guessing about your sanity.
Okay I try that tomorrow when I’m around some pavement

A other thing to look at is the engine mounts.

My credo
Lead follow or get out of my way
I wouldn't rule out the bendix drive on the starter. I've replaced several that allow the starter drive gear to clank on the fly wheel.

If the carrier bearing is bad... replace it. U joint issues usually show themselves at speed... not low speed parking lot maneuvers. However... the carrier bearing could.

Try putting the truck on an incline idling while stationary. Rev it up a couple times and see if it clanks. That's a fairly good test for a starter drive. If it clanks... I would pull the starter and inspect it.

Do you ever hear the noise when stationary... or only when in motion?
