Hey, splitting headache tonight, but it hit me this evening that I hadn't seen anyone else post about this legal method to get a title for any vehicle purchased on a bill of sale and not reported stolen.

Ignore how horribly sleazy this guy looks:

I did this with my 1953 Coronet.

Bought my Coronet off Craigslist in WV. $800 and a signed bill of sale at a notary.

Managed to get a car with a 12 digit serial number no vin registered in VT with legal plates. Super easy process.

Thought this could be of use to save some trucks. Lots of no title Rangers to be had.

Seems a little shady. Granted, he *did* say that in Vermont a non-resident can register a vehicle, but it still seems shady.

It absolutely does, but it works.

It seems sketchy because for once, motor vehicle law doesn't suck and make sense.

Heck, if someone wants to pursue it as part of this thread, I'll walk you through it

Now I'm curious, because the body I bought for my truck came off a salvage titled truck. In Illinois you can't legally drive a salvage titled vehicle, and since Illinois sucks, you can't legally repair them yourself. Technically supposed to take them to a certified shop to have them inspected and repaired. So I used the engine/frame VIN on my new title, but if anyone ever checked the body VIN it probably wouldn't go over well..

How does this all work with the inspection and emissions laws? Does Vermont not have those? I would definitely have to have emissions or I won't be able to get on base. It's required for federal installations regardless of whether the region the installation is in does or doesn't require emissions or the person owning the vehicle's area of residence not requiring emissions.

Take the proof of purchase to VT and get their registration, then take that to your state and get a title. I think most states have a temporary tag so you can get it to emissions and such

They have inspection, but the catch is (check me on this) only enforceable in Vermont.

Like I said, it's a law that finally makes sense.

Titles are issued by the state and it's very convenient living near the state capitol where they'll have the main offices for tags and titles, in some cases they will print one up right there(iirc). Used to have a friend in TN who bought cars at the city, county, or state auctions, usually without a title and even buying from them a title can be hard to get, even in the capitol, they have so many pitfalls sometimes

You don't leave it registered in VT, you just use VT to get an initial registration. You take the VT registration to your state DMV, transfer it over and get a new title and registration from your own state, then you follow your states inspection requirements.

Technically you could just leave it registered in VT but the whole scam is to just use VT to turn a bill of sale into a registration that you can use in other states to obtain a title.

Hopefully the VT DMV doesn't catch on.
