When I turn my volume knob I get a scratchy noise thru the speakers. It stops when the knob stops & radio plays well. Noise level seems the same regardless of volume knob position. Cause? Fix?

Bad volume control, replacement radio units are so cheap, it's not worth the trouble, "I wanna keep it original" doesn't make sense either imo

Quit adjusting the volume... :haha:

I agree with Denise. It's a 30 year old radio, just replace it. They are all over ebay for less than 20 bucks. The volume knob is basically just a rheostat and they simply wear out over time. While not exactly a complex or costly fix, trying to replace it without breaking something else in the process is not an easy task.

I picked up an AM FM CD player for my truck from Best buy for $85, it was what they call "open box" reduced-price, with the promise that everything was in there, and everything was, it plays great, sounds great, no noise no distortion, has Bluetooth and all the other bells and whistles that go with newer technology,

You paid too much for that.

I just got a similar unit, same features, with all the install stuff for $80 from Crutchfield.

So there's really no fix? What if I'm one of those 'keep it original' freaks?

Look on eBay or some junk yards still cheaper than trying to repair it do you know anything about electronics? I failed electronics 101 miserably myself. Got to bridge circuits and that's where I got sidetracked which happened to be about 50 years ago. Last I heard ohms is still the law :)

I have had luck quiteing noisy knobs like you describe by squirting a little silicone lubricant into the knob surround and turning back and forth. Maybe a good last stitch effort. Some products labeled "for electronics"
