Got it thanks all. Any idea what is behind the race on the inside of the pinion? It looks like a shim or something in the way of the race that is flimsy and I don’t want to pound too hard if what I’m hitting can’t be replaced.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Shim used to set pinion depth.

Ok thought so... these things are in tight I’m going to have to find a way to get the puller behind them.

In regard to the shims, did you use the tool to measure depth and/ or is there anyway to match what was there previously? I saved all the parts in order and have lots of shims.

I think I am going to try to turn this into an end to end rebuild from pull to install because everything I can find is scattered.
