The AR-10 was first and was chambered in .308. Thank the politicians for forcing the Air Force AR-15 on the rest of the services. The Air Force was just looking for a light rifle for guard duty. Not combat. IIRC McNamara was the one who forced the issue. Made NATO members rather angry too since they had just converted over to 7.62X51 NATO (.308) at the United States insistence for cartridge commonality.Yeah, but thats "new fangled stuff".
I grew up with bolt guns and Garands.
AR's were just coming out and nobody trusted them. Besides, they shot "little itty bitty bullets", not manly stuff like 30.06 and .308.
