I have been fighting vacuum lines since I got this1989 Ford XLT Ranger. Here is the way I have them set up on a cold air intake that I pieced together. I have no lag in shifting or accelerating besides the fact it's only a 2.9 v6 and I get about 14 mile to the gallon

the only vacuum lines that go anywhere near the intake tube on a 2.9 of any year control the exhaust heat riser valve to help the engine warm up in cold climates. they are unnecessary if you aren't running a factory air box

Cold air intake of my own make. Just had trouble shooting with the check valve with 3 emissions coming from it. They were all rotted when I bought the truck. Trying to upload pictures but it just keeps saying file size to big. I'd y
