Rebuilding a stock 1985 2.3l. Intake valve seats have barely any pitting, the width is within spec and will clean up with some lapping.
The exhaust valve seats are another story: pitted, average 0.010" over spec, and worst get as wide as 1.115". Two of them have obvious variation in seat width as you go around it. See pictures for details.
My questions are:
1. I lapped the pictured exhaust valve seat with a new exhaust valve to see how it would clean up. Pitting on left is gone, pitting on right remains. What would make pitting depth uneven around the same valve?
2. What would cause the variation in valve seat width around the same valve?
3. What valve guide issues might I have or what should I look for?
4. I'm going to get a three angle valve job ( and whatever needs to be done with the valve guides) from a machine shop. Aside from lessened performance and some blue smoke, what problems would lapping the valves and running it as-is lead to?
