When did Ford switch from the emblem on the left to the emblem on the right? I always thought it was in the early 90's but I saw an 87 with the newer emblem, wondering if it was retrofit or if Ford put them out earlier than I thought.

I believe the "new" logo came out in '92 for the '93 trucks. I could be wrong.

83-86 was all chrome as pictured left. 87-88 were brushed metal effect with charcoal/black sides (like the one in my avatar) and '89 they went to the one in the OP to the right.

^That^

But it isn't odd to see them mismatched anymore. My Ranger has the 90s style badges, and I may even go to the 4th gen ones some day,

The one in your avatar looks to have the sides the same color as the front of the emblem. The 2nd pic the OP posted has the black sides...

Just an observation..

I've also seen an original, low mileage 89 that had the "Ranger Custom" badging that was entirely flat black from the factory. Much like these but "Custom" - https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-OEM-Ford-1987-1991-Ranger-Truck-Pickup-Fender-Emblems-Ornaments-1988-1989/143195709421?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

The picture is washed from the lighting, the edges are sharper too. I have been working on collecting the various Ranger badges, I will get a pic of my stash tonight.

In '87 "Custom" replaced "XL" as the base model, there is no 83-86 chrome "Custom" badge... from what I have read. I have never seen one and even the 87-88 is pretty scarce, I have came across two others so far in my travels. XL and Custom seemed to coexist on later trucks but I am not as up on the specifics of those.
