How goes the Ranger?
I'm gonna play with it tomorrow until I win a match, then move on to the Lexington.

The Ranger is could be good ship, but it has a few major drawbacks, the worst of which is that it is often paired against the premium Saipan, which is a T6 ship, but can field three groups of 4 T9 fighters, so unless it is a 4 CV game, which two guys who really know what they are doing you are screwed.

The next worst thing about it is long reload times on the planes. Other than that it is good, much better than Indi.

I have gotten secondary weapons kills, I even managed to ram someone with it.

I'm going to spend about 30K in free XP tomorrow to jump to Lex though because there is an easy challenge that pays out a few premium ships, but you need a T8 ship to do it.

Yeah, Ranger wasn't very big either. That kept her out of the Pacific during the war...

I was in my Cleveland that I don't play much anymore (gets up-tiered a lot now) and there is some guy firing out of smoke at a friendly BB. Hey wait a minute, I have an app for that now. Activate radar and there hides a British cruiser in plain sight.

Man that never gets old :buttkick:

Nice.

I am awaiting the upcoming CV rework. I've been playing the Charleston and Dreadnaught a lot lately because I am so pissed at the upper-tier play and players that it is getting frustrating.

A dd and cruiser traded paint in front of me one game over the weekend. Started with cussing each other out, ended up with them shooting and eventually popping torps at each other with me (in my NC) almost in the crossfire. I had to turn and go around the little baby fit. Nothing like starting the match dodging friendly torps...

A Musashi from across the map that I couldn't see ended up killing me that match, lots of fun there.

Upper tiers suck, I want the Iowa and Des Moines just because of where I live but it sucks playing my NC like a cruiser in tier 10 matches (it is like taking a plastic spork to a gunfight) with a bunch of crybabies.

I know. At least once a day some mouth-breathing basement dweller is bawling me out in chat because he got killed by planes while I was caught in a dog fight on the other side of the map, but it's my fault for not defending him.

I was in a T4 game today with the Dreadnaught and I straight up ran someone down. I just kept chasing him until I got the ramming kill. He tried so hard to avoid it too.

No offense, I usually don't count on any support from the carrier... that way I am not disappointed. Its hard to play my ship and take note if the carrier guy is doing good or not. More than once I have thought he just seemed to hide behind an island the whole game and it turns out he was the top scorer so I just don't judge.

How do you like Dreadnaught?

That's basically how you play CV. They are big slow targets with no main guns and a 5Km top secondary range, when you have it. You hide the ship, try to keep bombers off your team mates, and hit the enemy ships with bombers.

A single good full alpha strike from a CV that scores two torp hits should net the CV player between 50 and 75K points. That's a single attack.

The Dreadnaught isn't bad. I actually like it better than the NY. It is big and slow and has a long reload, but I can reliably get 2 kills per match, which is better than any other ship I have.

Yeah, half the time they are complaining that they need saved though.

That's the job of the direct fire ships. To keep other ships off the carrier.

The carrier can't run, can't maneuver, and some of them can't even shoot back. At best you have to be within 5Km of the attacking ship that can hit you from at least 10Km away.

In a real life carrier battle the ships often wouldn't even get in visual range of each other.

But this does accentuate another failing of the game's design. In a real life emergency, like a direct fire ship getting within range of the carrier, they wouldn't be limited to keeping one or two groups of planes in the air, and 2/3 of them in the hanger. It'd be all hands on deck, all planes in the air to defend the ship.

From the outside looking in (having never played a carrier) I would think they could kinda see how things are going and maybe start moseying out over yonder in a direction the enemy isn't. They don’t all camp out in one spot.

Battle off Samar... escort carriers escorted by DD's and DE's under attack from a major Japanese surface fleet. Their minimal airwing was mostly loaded out for land attack.

"Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers" is an excellent book on the battle. If it was a fictional work it would be too implausible to publish.

I don't always sit in one spot either. But with a direct fire ship you mostly worry about your one little area, and you are controlling one ship.

In a CV you are managing at least 3, up to 5 air wings, plus the ship, all over the entire map. It easy to miss when an enemy ship has come up the edge of the map and gotten through. Most times someone will warn you, but by then it is often too late, especially if it was a destroyer or a battleship that got through.

There is no outrunning a DD, and they are hard to hit with anything a carrier has. A CV may outrun a BB's hull, but will never outrun it's guns.

Yeah, its hard to keep track of exactly what the CV is doing.

I have rushed back to save the CV and come to find out he hadn't really accomplished anything and I just threw away a game to save a dud CV jockey.

Right after I got my Arizona a CV was crying for help, a cruiser had snuck around the other way. Pop up the spotter, angle slightly to brink turrets 1 and 2 to bear and aiming back over my shoulder while running flank speed the other direction I cut loose a full 12 gun salvo. Poor cruiser got like two citadels and detonated. It was awesome, I don't think anyone saw it though.
