Sorry, I started to fix them and then got busy elsewhere. Anything in particular you need quick?

Nothing urgent. I followed your write-up to add the xplorer fead to my 5.0L swap. Just wanted to see the pics for comparison.

Thanks!

87 BII 4X4, 5.0L & AOD.

I installed 1998 Explorer FEAD. I read the alternator is a 130 amp 4G. The wiring is simply a 2-wire plug and a "bat" wire that may or may not go to the Bat (+) or starter relay on my installation.

My BII alternator plug wiring (G/R, Y/W) plus large BK/O wire (bat+) runs to a three pin plug on the driver's side, then into the firewall. I'm assuming the Y/W + large BK/O wire goes to the fuse panel, not sure though as wiring diagrams I have don't really show for sure. The G/R goes to the alt light.

Most diagrams I've seen here on TRS and on the internet show the large wire running to the starter relay or bat (+). This is how the bat is charged. Alternator upgrade articles in the tech session even show this and the need to upgrade the wiring to handle a 130 amp alternator.

Now with all that said, when you installed the Explorer FEAD and used the 4G 130 amp alternator, how did you modify the stock BII/Ranger wiring? How did the 3-pin alt plug have to be modified? In the write up you state that "there are only two wires and between them one wire is mixed around." I can switch the pins around, just need to know for sure what wire goes to what pin.

Finally, did you upgrade any of the wiring due to the higher amps?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Mark

I did not change the wiring, I don't have a whole lot of draw and nothing else changed over my 65A system. I don't have a winch, big sound system or a ton of lights. Basically a stock truck with an efan.

I don't need the amps, I needed the room that the FEAD gave me and it happened to come with the bigger alternator.

For an update over time my lower flex hose pinched so I made the lower hose from a 2001 Explorer w/o oil cooler (Gates 22452), a chunk of 1.5" od pipe and a couple appropriate hose clamps. Note: truck has a 3" bodylift
