What's the black puck looking thing bolted to the case? It doesn't seem to be doing anything important. Is it just dead weight? Can I take it off?

It is a vibration damper installed on some years, you can remove it if you want to

Do not remove under penalty of law just like a mattress lol, I think the term is counterweight but seems non logical because all the weight of the transfer case hangs in that direction anyhow

I don't want to, really. I was just curious as to what it was and what it did. I looked up the exploded view of parts and it wasn't listed. It was sold in California, I thought maybe it was an emissions thing.

Yes, the giant metal weight on your transfer case, that isn't connected to anything, is an emissions device.

There in lies the humor. There really needs to be a sarcasm font.

Its an anode for the catalytic converter(emissions) that is remote mounted to the transfer case so it doesn't cause radio interference or put stress on the muffler bearings

It could also be a remote reservoir for the muffler bearing grease. It works via Bluetooth. I always wondered what that antenna hanging off of the t-case was for.
