Ok, so my moms Mustang is in the final stages. Right now I am trying to finalize the exhaust. Flex pipes have gotten my most of the way there, but I am stuck at one spot.

The car is a 64.5 Mustang, with a 302 swapped in and long-tube tri-y headers. The issue I am running into is at the end of the driver's side header. It is not pointed at quite the right place and comes too close to the body, mostly missing the hump in the trans cross member that the pipes are supposed to go under.

We heated the pipe and bent it in a bit and thought we had left enough room. This morning my new collector adapters arrived, and I was mocking parts up before final install and found that my pipes are going to hit the little bracket for the parking brake cable.

At this point I figure I can either try bending the header over farther, which is not easy, or I can stick the pipes in the press and flatten them a bit, which is a common solution Ford used on the Mustangs over the years, flatten a pipe when it won't fit right.

I just don't have an experience doing it. Any suggestions or ideas? The parking cable doesn't have a lot of room to be relocated. While the cables have adjustment in them, this is the front one and it is cut pretty tight.

Is it the header that’s going to hit? Or the pipe after the collector?

If it’s the pipe. A couple pie cuts and some welds can easily get you the room you need.

Other wise. A bench vise flattens exhaust well. Without crushing it.

It's the pipe after. It doesn't hit until about 5 inches after the collector adapter.

I talked to one of the guys I work with today who used to work in town at his dad's custom shop. He said he has done it ones or twice, and he just heats the part he wants flattened, and tosses it in the press. Looks ugly, works well.
