I have a 1993 4.0 ranger XL rwd manual transmission with California emissions(so I've been told, not 100% on that part) can anyone tell me what the ford part number is for my original ecu, or at least one that would be comparable to work in my truck? I fried mine and lost it in a pile of about 7 ecu's chasing down the bad ground that caused all my headaches over the summer. Vin is 1FTCR14X0PPB02593

Calif 4.0l engines should have EGR Valve in 1993 I believe, they didn't in other states

Ford uses part number 12A650 for ALL ECMs(PCMs), they still use it in 2018

They then add a pre-part number to designate year and vehicle model
F3 = 1993, F6 would be 1996, E9 would be 1989, 2000 and up are different

7F = Ranger

So F37F-12A650 is 1993 ford ranger ecu

The post part numbers(after 12A650) are where the problems come up, because Ford never publish anything on these numbers.
And they do denote engine size and transmission

And then there is the software number STAMPED on to the ECU label when Ranger was assembled, there will also be a white label with this number under the hood somewhere in 1993 models
This number also applies to engine/trans and emissions
and no published data on this one either

Some info on the software codes here: http://www.fuelinjectedford.com/page17.html

So look thru your pile of ECUs for F37F-12A650

And see if you can get the Post numbers and the software number

Thanks, that helped a lot I ended up finding it in my pile and ordering a rebuilt one offline which just arrived. Runs way better, still need to fix this "cylinder identification circuit failure" and hopefully the truck will be able to be driven again

My ECU came out of a 1995 Ford ranger the label said it was refurbished and doesn't have a part number my cover has a part number of f57f-12b523 bc... When I look up the part number for my ECU which will be f57f-12b523, will it end with a BC as well??

Welcome to the forum

f57f-12b523-bc is the plastic holder for computer, so no, not something you need to replace unless it is broken
Seen here: https://www.ebay.com/p/1528726537
Or here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165537752729

The Computer part number will always have xxxx-12A650-xxx as the center number string, in any year Ford

F57F is 1995 Ranger part, F5 = 1995, 7 = Ranger, F is the Ford department that makes the part

So your 1995 computer part number will be F57F-12A650-???
The suffix numbers -??? do designate what specific engine/trans the computer is for
But several suffixes mean the same thing, so finding an exact match is great if you can but not often possible
Ford never released a cross reference for these

If you don't have a sticker on computer with part number then you will need to find replacement that matches your specific vehicle
There are 3 things to match
Engine size, 2.3l, 3.0l or 4.0l in 1995
EGR or no EGR, 1995 should have EGR in most states
Manual Trans or Automatic trans

ok so my seal part number is f57f-12b523 bc and my computer part number would be F57F 12A650 ?? would it be (bc) as well?
my BCM part number was F57B-14B205-DG so would my computer part (pcm'ecm'ecu) end in DG??

No, none of those are related

The suffix is specific to that part only, not vehicle or model

If you don't have the engine computer's part number then you need to get one that matches your vehicles specifics:
